English Proficiency Exams
Trinity College requires any student who has attended school outside of the United States to demonstrate English language proficiency for the purpose of ensuring academic success through their application.
Please note that you may be eligible to request a waiver for this requirement if you meet the criteria outlined at the bottom of this page.
You can provide proof of your English proficiency by submitting one of the following exams:
Recommended Scores
Trinity does not have minimum score cutoff requirements for any exam. We use a holistic review process which includes other materials such as essays, writing samples, and interviews to evaluate English proficiency. Applicants whose test scores fall outside the ranges below are still encouraged to apply. We strongly encourage all applicants to interview to share more about themselves and further demonstrate their English proficiency.
Applicants are required to submit official English test scores. Duolingo English Test results are only accepted directly from Duolingo. IELTS or TOEFL results may be sent from the testing agency or verified and sent directly to the Admissions Office by a school official. The code to send TOEFL scores to Trinity College is 3899.
Exam | Recommended Score |
Duolingo English Test | 130 (overall) or higher |
IELTS | 7.0 (with band scores of 6.5) or higher |
TOEFL iBT | 100 (recommended subsection scores of 25) or higher |
